Housing Allowance Program - Berkeley Campus Guidelines

April 30, 1999

DEANS AND DEPARTMENT CHAIRS:

I am pleased to announce that the Office of the President has increased the maximum housing allowance under the Salary Differential Housing Allowance Program for faculty to $50,000 per recipient, effective March 15, 1999. In issuing this change, the campus has also been provided the ability to establish guidelines for repayment of housing allowances in the event the faculty member chooses to leave the University after a short period of employment. In lieu of establishing a repayment program, the campus will limit the maximum lump sum payment to any recipient to $25,000 and any approved allowance above that level must be paid out over a period of five years. These are maximum limits and departments may establish their own schedule of payments within these limits. In order to maintain maximum flexibility of the program to address individual circumstances, exceptions, with appropriate justification, can be requested through my office.

To receive the housing allowance, either a lump sum payment or distributed payments, the faculty member must be on active pay status and in residence.

The allowances must be paid from non-state funds and within available departmental resources. The complete program description is now available in Academic Personnel Manual 190, Appendix E or on the web at http://www.ucop.edu/acadadv/acadpers/apm/apm-190-e.pdf.

Questions regarding this program can be addressed to the Academic Personnel Office.
