DEANS AND DEPARTMENT CHAIRS:
Office of the President has requested that all campuses develop and
implement a “career equity review” process to “ensure
that all ladder-rank faculty are appointed at the appropriate rank and
step consistent with their academic accomplishments.” Attached
are the Berkeley campus guidelines for Career Equity Review (CER) which
have been developed in consultation with the Deans and the Academic
Senate. The CER is intended to address possible inequities identified
at certain points in a faculty member’s career. Promotions and
advancement to Step VI and to Above-Scale status already provide a form
of career review. During these reviews, you should determine if the
faculty member is at the appropriate step for his or her career and
make your recommendation accordingly. Also attached is a set of Frequently
Asked Questions and a checksheet to be used and submitted with the CER
request.
Requests for a CER can now be submitted for actions effective July
1, 2004. As noted in the guidelines, all career equity reviews should
be conducted in conjunction with a normal merit process and are subject
to the same submission deadlines. Because of the delay in issuing these
guidelines, deans and chairs may ask for a delay in submitting merits
and CERs, but they must do so in advance of the established deadlines.
